Bridgerton Season 1 Alternate Ending Exists, And It's a Huge Disappointment

Sometimes it's just better to leave things as they are.

Bridgerton season 1 made a huge splash after premiering on Netflix in 2020. Fans around the world binge-watched the entire season in one day!

And that's not surprising, because the show's plot is so full of different storylines, all of which are intriguing enough to try to catch up on.

Of course, the love life of Daphne Bridgerton got most of the attention, but there was one lady who was even more mysterious and controversial. And that, of course, is Lady Whistledown.

At the end of the season, we find out that it was Penelope Featherington, played brilliantly by Nicola Coughlan, who screwed over the whole town, including her own family.

Revealing the scandalous fact about Marina was a bit harsh, but for Pen, it seems to have been worth it, as it messes with her love interest, Colin Bridgerton.

She even made her best friend Eloise suffer.

Fans, however, were not particularly impressed with the big reveal – for them, it was a bit too obvious.

"As I was watching the show there was just something about Pen that made me think she was Lady Whistledown, especially how she would react/respond to Eloise. She also was looked down upon by her mom and two sisters, they didn't really care much about her it seemed; so for Pen to write the scandal that shamed their family seemed like she had nothing to lose," Reddit user soccergal123 said.

There is also one small detail that helped fans put two and two together.

"Gotta love that her nickname is 'Pen' as in a pen you write with, hence her being Lady Whistledown," Reddit user ToughGuava said.

But as it turns out, the writers of the Bridgerton series had something else in mind. As Nicola Coughlan revealed at Netflix's TUDUM event, the ending was initially different.

"They were going to make it seem like it was Cressida Cowper," the actress shared.

Well, that news was shocking because, as we know, the show is based on a book series by Julia Quinn, and in the book, it's Penelope who is revealed to be the town's Gossip Girl.

Actually, it's funny how Coughlan found out her character was Lady Whistedown.

"It was after getting cast that I found out, and I found out on an internet fan forum. I realized there was this huge fandom behind these books. It was like this whole other world opened up. But, they were like 'When Penelope is revealed as Lady Whistledown' and I went 'WHAT?'"

So, in the end, it seems like the show's writers made the right choice, because now it's really impossible to imagine anyone else (especially Cressida, ew) being Lady Whistedown.
