In anticipation of what is likely to be the first trailer, a new poster for The Witcher season three teases Henry Cavill’s last outing as the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. Released courtesy of Netflix, the poster finds Cavill’s Geralt protecting Princess Ciri for the final time before departing the series and making way for The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth to take over as the beloved video game character. Check out the first poster for The Witcher season three below.
"As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it,” the official synopsis for season three of The Witcher reads. "Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever."
Returning showrunner Lauren Hissrich has promised that The Witcher season three will be accurate to the books on which the show is based. Which is rather ironic considering what was reported regarding Cavill’s departure. "What is so interesting is that season three, to me, is the closest thing that we've done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books,” Hissrich said. “Obviously, we can't do every page, but Time of Contempt gave us so many big action events, plot points, defining character moments, huge reveals of a big bad. There's so much to do that we were able to stick really, really closely with the books."
The Witcher May End with Season 5

Fans of The Witcher were stunned to learn that Henry Cavill will walk away from the series at the end of the third season. "My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season four," Cavill stated in a statement via social media. Thus, Independence Day: Resurgence star and brother of Thor, Liam Hemsworth, will step in as the lead of The Witcher with season four.
The news has not gone down well with audiences, some of whom have since launched petitions calling for Cavill to come back. This has left the series on somewhat shaky ground, with recent rumors claiming that The Witcher will not go beyond five seasons.
Hemsworth though cannot wait to don a white-haired wig and battle beasts in The Witcher. “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” Hemsworth said when the casting announcement was first made. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
Led by Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia alongside Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Freya Allan as Ciri, season three of The Witcher has not yet been given a release date, but is expected to debut on Netflix later this year.
